Humanity has always been shaped by progress. We transform discoveries into tools, tools into machines and machines into increasingly complex systems. Artificial intelligence is often described as one of the highest achievements of this development, but it does not necessarily have to represent its final stage.
A possible next step would be the construction of artificial realities: simulated environments that no longer reproduce only isolated processes, but entire worlds, histories, civilizations and conscious agents. If such simulations became sufficiently advanced, humanity might eventually attempt to reconstruct its own past.
This is where the idea of Recursive Reality begins. Instead of assuming that a simulation must always be created by an external base reality completely separate from our own, the model asks whether the relationship between simulator and simulated world could form a closed causal structure.
In that scenario, a civilization in our future creates a reality that reproduces its own historical origin. The simulated world develops, humanity emerges, technology advances and eventually the inhabitants construct the same kind of simulation again. The simulator therefore exists inside the very reality whose existence it helps to explain.
